We took some friends out yesterday to plant a cache on the lake and while waiting, found a cache with a couple wooden geocoins inside.
On the back side was embossed "Get your own personalized Geocoins at www.airlik.com/geo/coin/.html or at least that is what I think it says. The burned in writing isn't too clear and all the possible url's I type in lead nowhere.

Anyone know where I can get these coins?

"Muggles"!?

Okay, so you're going to have to pardon me for a second again because I think I'm going to go on a small rant... many of you liked the last rant, Kill The Toys 22 postings and counting, so here it goes again...

So what is with all this "there were lots of Muggles around so I had to be careful..." crap!? I'm quiet aware that the age range of Geocachers is very broad, but come on already... Muggles? Did Geocaching become somehow affiliated with the Harry Potter films over the last couple of years or what? Every time I read a post with the word "Muggle" in it it just makes me cringe... I feel like I'm back in junior high school surrounded by all of the Dungeons & Dragons kids!

I guess the whole "word that I shall never speak again" thing i.e. "Muggles" isn't to bad, it just gets under my skin. When I first joined the Geocaching community it had a different feel, I'm not really sure how to describe it, but it was different. Now, it feels like everything else, polluted with pop culture.

So, I guess that concludes my little rant. Hope I didn't step on to many toes. What do you all think about it, questions or comments!?

Cheers'

I live in Arcata, California about an hour away from the Oregon border. My favorite cache area is a small coastal town Trinidad, which is about 15 minutes away. I love caching this area because of the great views along the beaches, the harbor and the redwoods. Plus if you like to hike, walk or bike you can do a day of caching with minimal driving.

I travel quite a bit, so I'm curious to hear about other cool cache spots or just to learn where different people are from.

I'm new here to Tribe--this is a very cool community of folks! I first joined to chat with folks that play the Didgeridoo as I do but then I discovered the Geocaching Tribe and just had to say hello and join up! I have been Geocaching for many years now and probably like to hide caches more than I like finding them. I recently designed a new Geocoin to raise money for Wildlife Warriors Worldwide--the late Steve Irwin’s wildlife conservation organization. Take a look at the Crikey Fundraiser coin at: www.geocities.com/thesolorover/crikeycoin
I am also active in several Reptile conservation and research projects and I also host a reptile and amphibian identification website called "The Snakegame" that will help those of you caching in the southeast USA to ID snakes you may see in the field. Check out The Snakegame and my other projects at www.geocities.com/thesolorover/snakegame
Take care and I look forward to chatting with you all.

I just heard about geocaching a couple of days ago and it sounds amazing. I have been reading some basic info on the game. Would anyone be willing to elaborate more on the game. Any suggestions on gps units to look into.

Cool cache swaps

So tell me what the coolest kinds of swaps you like to use - - both to put IN and take OUT.

I love travel bugs, but who doesn't!! I try to take a bug and leave a bug. I also like foreign coins, and shop the clearance aisles for cool things ... did a dozen pairs of leather gloves once when I found them on sale for $1.

In the fall, when back to school items are cheap, we buy up boxes of 24 crayons and use them all winter ... what else?

Many of you might not agree...some may...but I think it is about time to KILL ALL THE TOY CACHES! Nothing is worse than spending the afternoon looking for a cache and then finding one full off crapy toys! Not that I don't like toys...or don't understand that families are invovled in Geocaching...but come on already, enough witht the fast food trinkets! I've always made a point of putting quality items, toys or otherwise, in a cache. I just wish others would do the same. Now I know some of you are just sitting there getting ready to say "It's not just about the cache, it's about getting off your butt and getting outdoors!" I know, but it wouldn't be GeoCACHING without the cache. Anyway, I'm an ass or I'm not, just my opinion...KILL ALL THE TOYS! Comments?

It took me about two years, but I finally went on my first cache outing ever, to a local site at Stewart Park at the base of Cayuga Lake here in upstate NY.

My friend "Tofu Shake" helped me get oriented, so to speak. Once we were close the potential locations seemed endless--to me--but Tofu Shake's experienced eye spotted an anomaly in the landscape. I left a ceramic animal, one of those Wade collectibles from Red Rose tea.

Now I'm eager to go out again...

I read somewhere that the National Park Services does NOT allow geocaches, but that the Bureau of Land Management does. Anyone know about the Nature Conservancy?

The director of the Finger Lakes Land Trust does not allow caching on FLLT's lands, mostly because she says cachers are "bushwhacking" and she erroneously compares cachers to mountain bikers and even snowmobilers!

Just curious about the politics of this. Seems to me that anti-caching sentiment can be elitist and needlessly exclusionary.

This evening I visited a cache that's a logbook placed in the stacks of a public library. Unless you know what you're looking for, the book looks just like a random library book on the shelf, but the author has included the dewey decimal number in the cache listing so cachers can find it easily.

For a few chuckles, get the comic books, Knights of the Dinner table issue on caching. It is extremely funny, also to anyone who is a former or current D&D-er.

Cheers.

I'm looking forward to doing some geocaching soon, first here in upstate NY and then down in DC when I move. For now I'm enjoying living vicariously thru posts from Patti and others. Would love to hear more stories, perhaps especially from the difficult terrain that I am unlikely to pursue.

I promise I'll never put a stupid cheap plastic toy in a cache. (I didn't realize how common it is; just the thought of finding a bunch of McD junk bums me out).

But They are so FUN!!! Here... pet it!

Hi there. Kim the Matriarch and Dog Wrangler from Team Yahtzee in Texas.

A friend of mine and I have a long-standing argument about TBs. I like them; he doesn't. I asked him why and he said, "Look, most of the time they are just jangly little things with a goofy toy attached and you pick this thing up and are suddenly saddled with the guilt of making sure it gets placed 'better'', 'farther', 'faster' than you can generally do. You are stuck with a jangly bit of metal that has Olympic needs." Now my geocaching buddy has issues he is working through and I try and pocket TB I find when were looking together surrepticiously but I got to thinking...

I need some ideas and help on making some creative TB themes so I can bolster my argument. DOes anyone out there have any good thoughts on what would make an engaging and fun TB? Help a fellow-ette cacher out.

Gracias!!

(caches logged under hippie558 and owner of "Will Work for RIde", a very un-needy TB)

Just Baught a Garmin etrex legend.
So yea uploadable maps,
Was wondering about peoples preferances for mapping software, right now I'm torn between OziExplorer or the MapSource / n-route from Garmin. anyone have a preferance or know of something else I should be looking at?
The scan your own map feature of Ozi has me intreged, but 8Mb is not alot of memory and I'm concerned about how much data space it would need.

Canadian cities and small places in Idaho / Montana being mapped would make me happy.

... in the middle of a nearly desolate industrial area, standing on an overpass where pedestrians never walk and definitely do not loiter. The bay wind is chilling my bones, the sun is in my eyes, and the only traffic is a steady stream of trucks rushing to and from the nearby port. I'm alternating between staring at my GPSr yet again to be sure I'm in the right place, investigating every crack and crevice I can find, staring around at the landscape hunting for clues, and wondering what bit of insanity is making me doing this. I've questioned the marital status of the cache creator's parents more than once, and now I've resorted to picking up road detritus looking to see if one of the bolts on the ground has a number engraved on the head.

It's very difficult to look inconspicuous when you're standing somewhere that there is absolutely no reason for anyone to ever stand, and doubly so when you have flaming fuchsia hair. (Note to self: next time, wear a hat.) I'm hyper-conscious of the fact that both the railroad tracks below me and the nearby port are potential terrorist targets, and a part of my brain is busy figuring out exactly what I'm going to tell the nice law enforcement officer that is bound to show up any moment now.

Just as I'm about to bag the whole thing and find the nearest cup of hot chocolate, I notice a word spraypainted on the ground near the railroad spur in front of the steelyard. Aha! But how to get there? There's clearly a road, but I can't see where it connects to anything.

I stride purposefully back to my car, pull out the laptop, and check my mapping software. Nothing. MapSource doesn't know nothin' 'bout no roads in front of no steelyards. I start driving, and eventually wind up on the road that goes where I need to go. After wandering around for a couple of minutes at my destintion I find the word painted on the ground, and in the middle of it is a metal surveyors disk with coordinates for the next stage. Success!

Do you ever have trouble explaining to your friends why you think geocaching is fun?

basics for a gps

so..

what is the bare minimum for a gps unit that a new geocacher would need (i'm new)? I'm thinking about scrounging around and getting one SUPER cheap, and I'm curious what it is that I'm 'really' looking for.

Those rhinos are cool... is there an advantage to getting one with 'mapping' for instance? i already have two way radios which are fun to have around, so i guess I don't need that...

any help is appreciated!

Geocaches mistaken for bombs

This was sent to me by an acquaintance down in the states who is a police EOD. Taken from the Times Messenger News

Tuesday, August 31, 2004

SPRINGVILLE - An Internet game called "Geocaching" caused quite a stir at the new Springville Community Park on Monday.

Several area departments, including a bomb disposal squad from the Naval Support Activity-Crane, responded to a suspicious object at the park.

"When I arrived, I went to where (an informant) advised me that the male subject placed the item by the tree stump," according to Lawrence County Police Department Sgt. Lonnie Johnson.

"I located it, and it was a round tube approximately 10 inches long and three inches around. It was covered with camouflage tape, and nothing could be identified as to what was inside."

Police then contacted the Perry Township Volunteer Fire Department, which blocked area roads. Another county police officer evacuated nearby houses.

"Crane EOD unit was contacted and arrived within 30 minutes," Johnson's report continued. "They used their robot to go and observe the item and then took an X-ray of the item to see if they could determine what was inside. The X-ray showed metal, what appeared to be wires, and some unidentified objects inside."

The EOD team exploded the item, and then it was determined that the item had small school supplies inside.

"The item was placed there for a game that is played on the Internet on a Web site," the report stated.

Geocaching is an adventure game for Global Positioning System users.

"The basic idea is to have individuals and organizations set up caches all over the world and share the locations of these caches on the Internet," according to www.geocaching.com. "GPS users can then use the location coordinates to find the caches.

A cache, the object GPS users search for, can contain a logbook and notes from other cache visitors.

Rules for the game are: Take something from the cache once you find it, leave something in return for it and write about it in the logbook.

Word to the wise: exercise some common sense folks. Don't put your geocache in anything that might be construed as looking like an IED, don't put it underneath a bridge, by a railway line, etc. You might even think about figuring out exactly where all the geocaches in your area are and getting in touch with the police in your area, explaining to them what geocaching is (don't assume they know) and providing them with a list of locations. That way if someone finds something suspicious, they will hopefully look on the list you provided first and save themselves a lot of trouble.

Garmin GPS II+ shock reset problem

I recently got a used GPS II+ in good condition, been experimenting with putting on my bike with a handlebar mount. I've noticed that a physical shock will turn the unit off, and when I turn it back on it has to reacquire, only to happen again when I hit the next bump. I have heard that this is a problem with other Garmin units, wondering if anyone here has some fix ideas for it? I will try taping the batteries together and bending out the contact springs, but not sure if that will be enough...

Theme Caches

I want to make a "theme" cache...but im not sure how to do one. I tried a "disney only" type cache theme..but most people can't seem to go along with it. Peopel were trading wierd monkey stuff dolls for my Piglet Firgures. So..i dont know what to do. I explained the rules as best as i could..but ppl just dont seem to get it. Maybe i should try a different type theme....maybe DISNEY was too hard for them? Any Suggestions?

Has the price of gass ($1.90 gal. where I live in FL) cut back on your Geocaching? I know I've done most of the local caches and now they just keep getting further and further away...

Just back from finding my first cache. Learned about the sport by discovering this tribe. Thank you!

Note to the toy haters; getting kids to hike can be a challenge. A treasure hunt gets them moving. We'll be taking toys out of the cache and putting other things, more general interest items, in.

My geocaching tag is "BullyBeagle TreasureTracker". The name was a group decision. What can I say, whatever it takes to keep the little bastards, er, darlings, motivated!

As soon as I find disposable income once again, I'll find myself a GPS and try my hand at this! I keep reading about spray paint - is this some sort of marker to let the searcher know that they're close?

Right now I'm letterboxing - the low-tech relative of geocaching. I've started a Tribe, if anyone is interested: letterbox.tribe.net

Have you encountered any really interesting puzzles?

I love caching, but I'm finding that I have more fun creating caches than hunting them, and I really like making puzzles.

1) When and how did you happen to start Geocaching?
2) How many finds do you have at the present time?
3) How many caches have you hidden?
4) What is your handle?
5) Location(s) you frequent?

Here are my answers:
1) My friend was talking to me one day and said "this may sound geeky"...at that instant, I was hooked. I officially start in July 2003.
2) 37 finds so far. Had to abort a few along the way.
3) I haven't hidden any yet...but I have ideas.
4) wahine_b
5) SF Bay Area and Southern California

Hi folks,

I have added 3 pictures of my first ever geocache I did with my Brother in San Diego in the Summer. It would be lovely to see some more beautiful pix of other people's caches.

Fires in SoCal

I've been checking for caches around my area this last week. I live in a part of SoCal where the fires have hit the area pretty hard. There are quite a few caches out there that are currently out of commission because of these fires. If you live in SoCal, just make sure you know where you are going, check on geocaching.com to make sure that the caches are still up and don't go out there if the air quality is bad. Be careful and happy caching.
