My personal favorite would have to be the Alamaden Quicksilver Mines area. I've been going to this area for years now and have never actually managed to find all of the caches (and they are bountiful). It's close to my home and far enough away to where I can consider it an adventure. :3

I plan on going up there again soon, weather and work permitting.

Hello Christine,

I live between San Francisco and San Jose. The Santa Cruz mountains that separate the bay from the ocean have many parks, lots of hiking trails, and lots and lots of caches. It's really fun area for hiking and caching. Check out the pics I posted for the La Vista de La Honda cache. :-)

There are also a lot of nice caches in the hills east of I-280. You can get close to these by car so if you're in the area and don't have time to go hiking in the mountain then check out western parts of San Mateo, Belmont, San Carlos and Redwood City. There are some great views of the bay, where you can see from San Francisco all the way to San Jose (if it's clear!). For example, the Hallmark Park cache.

Hey, that is really cool. I am down in the bay area a lot, so next time I'm doing some caching! Also, I have some family on the Columbia River Gorge--beautiful area! I love cache hiking and now I have two new potential ideas of where to go next and free places to stay to boot. Awesome!

If you love to hike from cache to cache this area is great (Arcata/95521 or Trinidad/95570 are my favorites). We have the beach and the redwood forest and nice bird marsh; almost all places are dog friendly and have a good range of different trails. Some will give you a good workout, but the views are worth it. Plus some really creative cachers around here.

Have a fun spring and summer! Thanks for the good tips and advice for a new cacher like me.

Hi Kitty,

Thanks for posting such a great topic!

I am in the Bay Area and most of my caching has been here in places that allow dogs off-leash. The East Bay Regional Parks are great because the default is that dogs are allowed! I still have some caches in these areas, but I am afraid that I may run out soon. There are some other spots in Marin, but I think I may have to start leashing my pups up for my caching adventures, but this makes it much more difficult and less fun.

I do some urban caches, too but mostly those are all in my neighborhood when I am passing by for another purpose.

I spent some time up in the North Cascades between Everett and Arlington, WA, where there is a very active caching community. That was great because I didn't know the area at all, but I had lots of caches to show me the best hikes!

I had a shorter stay in the Columbia River Gorge and I also enjoyed doing some caching there. It is such a spectacular area, there were lots of great places for caches.

It seems easiest to have good caching experiences close to home since the amount of research involved seems to be a lot. One thing I haven't really understood is driving from cache to cache and just hopping out of the car to grab them. My favorite thing to do is get to an area with lots of caches and take a walk around to get them or to go for a long hike where a cache or caches are the destination.

I live in Arcata, California about an hour away from the Oregon border. My favorite cache area is a small coastal town Trinidad, which is about 15 minutes away. I love caching this area because of the great views along the beaches, the harbor and the redwoods. Plus if you like to hike, walk or bike you can do a day of caching with minimal driving.

I travel quite a bit, so I'm curious to hear about other cool cache spots or just to learn where different people are from.
