Organizations that support geocaching, or not (NPS, BLM, etc.)

I read somewhere that the National Park Services does NOT allow geocaches, but that the Bureau of Land Management does. Anyone know about the Nature Conservancy?

The director of the Finger Lakes Land Trust does not allow caching on FLLT's lands, mostly because she says cachers are "bushwhacking" and she erroneously compares cachers to mountain bikers and even snowmobilers!

Just curious about the politics of this. Seems to me that anti-caching sentiment can be elitist and needlessly exclusionary.

  • It is a bit of a guess if a given cache will be welcome. One of my caches was discovered by the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) Police when they saw some "suspicious persons” hanging around it’s location. I now have a signed Polaroid of one of their Sergeants as McGruff and an “official” sounds like fun from the police.

There, also, is a (or was) a Cache on the grounds of the Foster City (California) PD.

On the San Francisco Pennisula there are at least 2 caches that the grounds keepers are helping to maintain. Even though they aren’t GeoCachers.
    • It seems the urban caches may be rejected due to confusion with terrorism or suspicious activity, and that caches in natural areas are thought to be too disruptive to the natural world. Both views strike me as too precious.

I may propose to FLLT that they at least allow virtual caches, which would seem to meet needs on both sides of the issue. But of course a virtual cache still requires a specific and distinctive destination; it's not simply taking a walk thru a land preserve. The preservation groups are missing a great opportunity for environmental education, IMO.
