Garmin GPS II+ shock reset problem

I recently got a used GPS II+ in good condition, been experimenting with putting on my bike with a handlebar mount. I've noticed that a physical shock will turn the unit off, and when I turn it back on it has to reacquire, only to happen again when I hit the next bump. I have heard that this is a problem with other Garmin units, wondering if anyone here has some fix ideas for it? I will try taping the batteries together and bending out the contact springs, but not sure if that will be enough...

I think that the problem is that with a box that small, there isn't room for any shock absorbtion foam. So any impact goes directly to the electronics which causes a break-down.

I would suggest that you get some foam, set the GPS into the foam and attach the foam to the bike.
That way the shock will be absorbed by the foam and save the GPS.

One thing I liked about my wrist gps is that I could set it for speed and then when I paddled my kayak, I could see who fast I was going. Then I could compare the same effort in different kayaks and see how they differed in performance.

Also I found that a normal paddle in my Mallard pushed me at 3.5 mph but when I went all out and tired myself out, I only went up to 3.9 mph so why exhause myself for only .4mph?

I've determined that it's not a problem with the electronics but rather the springs in the battery compartment being too weak. A sharp jolt breaks their contact and there's no capacitor in the electronics to keep them going so the unit shuts off. I've aleviated (sp?) the situation by wrapping one of the pairs of batteries in a PostIt note, which keeps them from moving so much in the compartment, but it will still turn off if I hit a sufficiently large bump. I sent an email to Garmin about this, supposedly there's some part for the battery compartment they used to send that would act as a spacer to increase the tension on the springs. I'll post more when I get a reply from them.
