As soon as I find disposable income once again, I'll find myself a GPS and try my hand at this! I keep reading about spray paint - is this some sort of marker to let the searcher know that they're close?

Right now I'm letterboxing - the low-tech relative of geocaching. I've started a Tribe, if anyone is interested: letterbox.tribe.net

I've only seen one cache that involved spray paint, and it was a particularly quirky one. Where else have you read about it?

You know, I think when I said "keep reading," I must've meant "seen once". Because now I can't find it anywhere.

Though, is it common to leave any markers near the cache?

I've seen some, but not too many. One that I've heard of involved somebody making arrow on the ground out of sticks, but I also hear that it didn't last very long.
